Robert Richmond developed architectural design guidelines for a development known as Prefumo Creek Estates, located at the northern edge of San Luis Obispo and nestled in a canyon between environmentally-sensitive Prefumo Creek and the Irish Hills. The City of San Luis Obispo felt that it was important for this neighborhood to have strong design guidelines in order to create a more distinctive and cohesive community, and to make the neighborhood a more attractive place in which to live.
Rather than dictate specific architectural styles, the Prefumo Creek Estates Design Guidelines rely on precepts of good architectural design such as integrity of style, simplicity of design, and a sense of proportion, while still encouraging owners and designers to express their individuality. As a result, the Design Guidelines focused on design features such as roof forms, windows and doors, materials and colors.
