Historic Motel Inn at San Luis Obispo

San Luis Obispo, California

Built in 1925, the Historic Motel Inn at San Luis Obispo is the first motel in the world. Because the motel had fallen into such disrepair that most of the buildings were uninhabitable, extensive demolition was required. This additional demolition greatly complicated the approval process. In addition, the owner’s program called for extensive additions besides rebuilding the historic bungalow courtyard. While the new additions are larger and frame the courtyard, the scale of detail is compatible and complimentary to the original structures. This project achieved the sophisticated ambiance of California’s Heritage Architecture, and the final design received unanimous approval from city officials and the general public.
